US Steel and Aluminum Tariff Hikes Take Effect

EU/EN - The new 50% tariffs imposed by the Trump administration on aluminum and steel imports from the rest of the world went into effect at midnight local time (06:00, Berlin time zone). This is the latest chapter in the US administration's trade war. Trump signed the executive order on Tuesday, June 3, increasing these tariffs from 25% to 50%. The United Kingdom has so far been spared from the measure adopted, based on the tariff agreement with the United States signed in May. However, US officials are reportedly trying to speed up negotiations with the various partners. The aim is to reach an agreement by July 8, the day on which the suspension of customs duties expires.

A cautious reaction has emerged from Brussels for now.

On the same day, Wednesday 4 June, European Commissioner Sefkovic and US representative Greer met in a diplomatically cordial atmosphere in Paris.

The doubling of US tariffs on steel imports will put enormous pressure on the European steel industry, the German steel association WV Stahl said. "We need to come up with negotiated solutions as quickly as possible, because time is running out," German economy minister Katherina Reiche said Tuesday, on the sidelines of OECD talks.

French trade minister Laurent Saint-Martin added: "We have to keep our cool and always show that the introduction of these tariffs is in no one's interest."
