EU/EN : Donald Trump spoke live on TV on Thursday, March 27, to announce 25% tariffs on cars imported into the United States. The increases should come into effect on April 2.
According to the White House, the US will collect "between 600 million and a trillion dollars in two years". This was followed by triumphal tones from Trump on the effects of the duties "it is the beginning of the liberation of America". Trump also explained that the increased tariffs will encourage car manufacturers to invest in the United States.
The tones became threatening in a post by Trump on Truth Social: "If the European Union works with Canada to economically damage the United States, large-scale tariffs will be imposed, much higher than those currently envisaged".
The EU: "we will provide a firm, proportionate, robust, well-calibrated and timely response"
The immediate response to Trump's announcement was entrusted to the spokesperson of the European Commission for Trade, Olof Gill, in the daily briefing with the press. Gill said: “We are prepared to safeguard our economic interests and, if necessary, to any unjust and counterproductive measures by the United States,” adding that she wanted to try to safeguard free trade with the US and that “the measures announced by the United States go in the completely wrong direction”. The Commission has opened a dialogue with other “global allies and partners around the world on the impact” of US tariffs on the EU, with Brussels remaining convinced that US measures will have a damaging impact, not only on the EU and the United States, but on the global economy.

Sono seguiti toni trionfalistici di Trump sugli gli effetti dei dazi “è l'inizio della liberazione dell'America”. Trump ha inoltre spiegato che le tariffe maggiorate incoraggeranno i produttori di automobili a investire negli Stati Uniti.
I toni sono diventati minacciosi in un post di Trump su Truth Social: "Se l’Unione Europea lavora con il Canada per danneggiare economicamente gli Stati Uniti, verranno imposti dazi su larga scala, ben più elevati di quelli attualmente previsti"
La Ue: “Pronti a reagire con fermezza”
La replica a caldo all'annuncio di Trump è stata affidata al portavoce della Commissione europea per il Commercio, Olof Gill, nel briefing quotidiano con la stampa. Gill ha dichiarato: “Siamo preparati a salvaguardare i nostri interessi economici e, se necessario, forniremo una risposta ferma, proporzionata, solida, ben calibrata e tempestiva a qualsiasi misura ingiusta e controproducente da parte degli Stati Uniti” e ha aggiunto di voler tentare di salvaguardare il libero commercio con gli Usa e che ”le misure annunciate dagli Stati Uniti vadano nella direzione completamente sbagliata”. La Commissione ha aperto un dialogo con altri ”alleati e partner globali in tutto il mondo sull'impatto” dei dazi Usa verso l'Ue, con Bruxelles che resta convinta che le misure statunitensi avranno un impatto dannoso, non solo sull'Ue e sugli Stati Uniti, ma sull'economia globale.
