Marine Le Pen interdite en 2027

On Monday, March 31, a Paris court sentenced Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right party Rassemblement National, to four years in prison.

EU/ EN - On Monday, March 31, a Paris court sentenced Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right party Rassemblement National, to four years in prison, two of which were suspended and two with an electronic bracelet, and five years of ineligibility, effective immediately, for misappropriation of public funds from the European Parliament, as well as a fine of 100,000 euros. Le Pen remains a member of the National Assembly. The French politician was convicted of having hired 12 parliamentary assistants in France between 2004 and 2016, paid with 2.9 million from the European Parliament which however expressly stated the national use of the funds allocated for assistants abroad. In the evening Marine Le Pen gave an interview on TF1 professing her innocence and confirming that she will appeal in time for the 2027 presidential elections. Le Pen will appeal, but until she wins any appeal she will be ineligible for any election for five years. She also accused the court of having made a "political decision" contrary to the rule of law to prevent her from running.
