The S&D Group's pre-European Council meeting of party leaders, attended by Elly Schlein

Importante meeting a Bruxelles.

EU/ENG - The European socialist and democratic landscape is currently undergoing a phase of rigorous agenda-setting, a process epitomized by the strategic coordination observed during the S&D pre-Council summit in late June 2023. This meeting, which served as a crucial convening point for party leaders and secretaries from across the European progressive spectrum, was centered on articulating a unified response to the continent’s evolving political, social, and economic challenges. Within this effort to forge a coherent trans-European front capable of balancing emerging conservative forces, the active and prominent participation of Democratic Party (PD) Secretary Elly Schlein underscored a deliberate attempt to reposition Italy’s largest opposition party at the very heart of the European progressive family.

Schlein’s role in this summit was the culmination of an intensive three-day diplomatic mission to Brussels, which functioned as a tactical precursor to the high-level decision-making. Between June 27 and June 29, 2023, the Secretary utilized her presence to bolster the PD’s domestic platform through direct, high-profile institutional engagement. Her visit commenced on Tuesday evening with a closed-door summit with the PD’s delegation to the European Parliament, an engagement aimed at harmonizing the party’s national legislative objectives with the technical rigors of parliamentary activity. By mid-week, the agenda transitioned into a series of policy consultations that grounded the PD’s platform in the European reality: a pivotal meeting with European Parliament President Roberta Metsola at noon on Wednesday reaffirmed the party’s pro-European institutional commitment, while substantive sessions with Commissioner for Jobs and Social Rights Nicolas Schmit and Commissioner for Economy Paolo Gentiloni provided the technical depth required to navigate the European debate on labor protections, the minimum wage directive, fiscal reform, and the implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Ultimately, these engagements—ranging from the logistical consolidation of the PD delegation to the broader ideological alignment achieved at the S&D summit—demonstrate a concerted effort by Secretary Schlein to weave Italy’s domestic progressive agenda into the European institutional fabric. By successfully bridging the gap between local grassroots mobilization, evidenced by her evening event with the PD’s Belgian branch, and the high-level decision-making at the pre-Council meeting, Schlein effectively leveraged her three-day visit to integrate the PD’s new trajectory into the overarching mission of the European Socialists and Democrats.
