EN - Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential elections has evoked different reactions among the various exponents and representatives of the EU.
The President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen on X congratulated Trump, recalling that "The EU and the United States are more than just allies: we are linked by a true partnership between our peoples, which unites 800 million citizens. So let's work together on a strong transatlantic agenda that continues to deliver for them". The President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola also emphasized the importance of "keeping the transatlantic bond strong, rooted in our shared values of freedom, human rights, democracy and open markets".
France and Germany have coordinated their response to Donald Trump's return as US President, with Emmanuel Macron saying on X that Berlin and Paris would work towards a united, stronger and sovereign Europe within "the new context ". In his comment, Olaf Scholz says: "Many things certainly change under a government led by Donald Trump, he has always said this clearly. Our messages are clear: first of all, Germany remains a reliable transatlantic partner. We know what contribution we must guarantee this partnership and we will guarantee it in the future too. And this also in relation to the threat that Russia represents for all NATO partners".
On the part of NATO, Secretary General Mark Rutte wrote on X that he was ready to "work with him again to promote peace through the strength of NATO".
The leaders of the groups expressed their views in Parliament.
Manfred Weber, secretary of the EPP, the main group in the European Parliament, made a concise and cautious comment: "Congratulations to Donald Trump. The voters of the United States have spoken. Our 🇪🇺🇺🇸 democracies must unite for peace, prosperity and values.
These elections mark a turning point. Europe must defend its interests firmly and forcefully, while maintaining close transatlantic cooperation."
The Socialists and Greens were critical, recalling the common values between the EU and the US.
The president of the Socialists and Democrats EU group, Iratxe Garcia Perez, wrote: "We know Trump's project: authoritarianism, xenophobia and lack of opportunities. But let's not forget the values we have been taught, the societies we want to be. The democratic and progressive forces in the EU and the US must be united in the fight for a more just, sustainable and inclusive future".
On X, the leader of the EU Left, Frenchman Manon Aubry, declared that "while European Trumps like Orban are quick to congratulate Trump, it is up to us to return to the fight with clarity and determination if we do not want to follow the same path as the United States". And she added: "Trump is an enemy of women, minorities, freedom of the press and the climate. My thoughts go out to all those who will suffer the effects of his devastating policies in a country that has never been so fractured. My thoughts also go out to all the people who will suffer the effects throughout the world".
On the sovereignist front, the tone was instead enthusiastic. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban summarized the reactions by hailing Trump's election as "The greatest comeback in the political history of the United States! Congratulations to President Donald Trump for his enormous victory. A victory necessary for the world!".
IT - La vittoria di Donald Trump alle presidenziali statunitensi ha evocato reazioni diverse tra i vari esponenti e rappresentanti dell'Ue.
La presidente della Commissione Europea Ursula von der Leyen su X si è congratulata con Trump, ricordando che "L'Ue e gli Stati Uniti sono più che semplici alleati: siamo legati da un vero partenariato tra i nostri popoli, che unisce 800 milioni di cittadini. Allora lavoriamo insieme a un'agenda transatlantica forte che continui a dare risultati per loro". Anche la presidente del Parlamento europeo Roberta Metsola pone l'accento sull'importanza di "mantenere forte il legame transatlantico, radicato nei nostri valori condivisi di libertà, diritti umani, democrazia e mercati aperti".
Francia e Germania hanno coordinato con urgenza la loro risposta al ritorno di Donald Trump come Presidente degli Stati Uniti, con Emmanuel Macron che ha affermato su X che Berlino e Parigi avrebbero lavorato per un'Europa unita, più forte e sovrana all'interno "del nuovo contesto".
Nel suo commento, Olaf Scholz dice:"Sicuramente molte cose cambiano sotto un governo retto da Donald Trump, questo lo ha sempre detto in modo chiaro. I nostri messaggi sono chiari: per prima cosa la Germania resta un partner transatlantico affidabile. Sappiamo quale contributo dobbiamo garantire per questa partnership e lo garantiremo anche in futuro. E questo anche in relazione alla minaccia che la Russia rappresenta per tutti i partner Nato".
Da parte della Nato, il segretario generale Mark Rutte scrive su X di essere pronto a "lavorare di nuovo con lui per promuovere la pace attraverso la forza della Nato".
In Parlamento europeo si sono espressi i leader dei gruppi.
Stringato e prudente il commento di Manfred Weber, segretario del PPE, principale gruppo in Parlamento europeo: "Congratulazioni a Donald Trump. Gli elettori degli Stati Uniti si sono espressi. Le nostre 🇪🇺🇺🇸 democrazie devono unirsi per la pace, la prosperità e i valori.
Queste elezioni segnano una svolta. L'Europa deve difendere i propri interessi con fermezza e forza, mantenendo al contempo una stretta cooperazione transatlantica."
Critici i socialisti e i Verdi con richiamo ai valori comuni tra Ue e Usa.
La presidente del gruppo dei Socialisti e Democratici Ue Iratxe Garcia Perez ha scritto: "Conosciamo il progetto di Trump: autoritarismo, xenofobia e mancanza di opportunità. Ma non dimentichiamo i valori che ci sono stati insegnati, le società che vogliamo essere. Le forze democratiche e progressiste nell'Ue e negli Usa devono essere unite nella lotta per un futuro più giusto, sostenibile e inclusivo".
Su X la capogruppo della Sinistra Ue, la francese Manon Aubry ha dichiarato che "mentre i Trump europei come Orban si affrettano a congratularsi con Trump, tocca a noi tornare a lottare con lucidità e determinazione se non vogliamo seguire la stessa strada degli Stati Uniti". E ha aggiunto: “Trump è un nemico delle donne, delle minoranze, della libertà di stampa e del clima. Il mio pensiero va a tutti coloro che subiranno gli effetti delle sue politiche devastanti in un Paese che non è mai stato così fratturato. Un pensiero anche a tutte le persone che ne subiranno gli effetti in tutto il mondo”.
Sul fronte sovranista i toni sono stati invece entusiasti, Ne ha compendiato le reazioni, il premier ungherese Viktor Orban, che ha salutato l'elezione di Trump come "Il più grande ritorno nella storia politica degli Stati Uniti! Congratulazioni al presidente Donald Trump per la sua enorme vittoria. Una vittoria necessaria per il mondo!".
