EU/EN: On Monday, February 10, US President Trump significantly increased tariffs on steel and aluminum imports into the United States to a flat 25% “without exceptions or exemptions.” The US tariff rate on aluminum will increase from 10% to 25% starting March 4, eliminating quota agreements and thousands of product-specific tariff exclusions, including product-specific steel.

The President of the EU Commission, von der Leyen, although unable to attend the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg, officially said she regretted “the decision by the United States to impose tariffs on European steel and aluminum exports.” Von der Leyen then promised that “unjustified tariffs on the EU will not go unanswered,” and announced “firm and proportionate countermeasures.” Giving her a helping hand are the main groups that refer to the so-called ‘Ursula majority’, united as never before since the post-vote of 6-9 June.
