President Von der Leyen at the EP Plenary: innovation, energy, economic resilience and security

Ursula von der Leyen il 22 gennaio a Strasburgo.

EU/EN - Ursula Von der Leyen, spoke on 22 January 2025 in the plenary session of the European Parliament with a report on the last European Council of 19 December. The President of the Commission stated: "If we want to protect our interests and uphold our values, we must also be economically strong". The President remarked: "The rules of engagement are changing. We are dealing with powers of continental size. And they engage with each other based primarily on their respective interests. Our values do not change. But to defend them, some things have to change".

The new Competitiveness Compass
The Commission is committed to implementing the strategies of the new European Union Competitiveness Compass, which turns the excellent Draghi report into action and, according to Von der Leyen: "It will be the North Star of the new Commission and will guide our work for the next 5 years." The second mandate has three objectives: "first, closing the innovation gap with our competitors, second, a common roadmap for decarbonisation and competitiveness, and third, strengthening our economic resilience and security".

New affordable energy plan and the growth of investments in innovation.
The European Union must "invest in next-generation clean energy technologies, such as fusion, advanced geothermal and solid-state batteries. Our clean and low-carbon energy systems must be better connected".
The President is counting on the growth of investments in innovation, already increasing by 10% in 2024, returning to the mobilisation of capital and total private investment in Research and Development at the levels of the United States and China. According to Von der Leyen, the EU "needs a favourable capital market for companies and startups. Going forward, we will launch the EU Savings and Investment Union - as the other former Italian Prime Minister, Enrico Letta, proposed last year in his Single Market Report - we will create new products, new incentives for risk capital and a new push to ensure a continuous flow of investments into our Union."
Renewing the relationship with the US.

Renewing the relationship with the US
Pragmatism in negotiations with the US ally will inform the European Commission's action, remaining faithful to European principles, aware that the two economies, with trade of 1,500 billion euros per year, are destined to remain highly integrated.
