How Rob Jetten and D66 Stopped the Far-Right in the Dutch Elections

EU/ENG - Twenty-four hours after the closing of the polls and the official validation of the final results by the Dutch Electoral Council (Kiesraad), the Netherlands is celebrating an outcome that feels nothing short of miraculous. The early general elections held on October 29, 2025—convened urgently following the collapse of the short-lived cabinet led by Dick Schoof—have concluded with a stunning plot twist: the progressive liberals of Democrats 66 (D66), led by the young Rob Jetten, have clinched a historic relative victory, halting the seemingly unstoppable advance of Geert Wilders's PVV.

A Breathtaking Neck-and-Neck Race: The Map of the New Parliament

Pre-election polls forecasted yet another triumph for the radical right or, at the very least, a clear lead for the sovereignist bloc. Instead, the ballot boxes painted a scenario of extreme fragmentation, settled only on the photo finish:

D66 (Democrats 66): 26 seats (16.94% of the vote). A formidable leap forward of no less than 17 seats compared to the previous election, driven by a campaign focused on reviving the European project, civil rights, ecological transition, and a strong, inclusive patriotic value proposition.

PVV (Party for Freedom): 26 seats (16.66% of the vote). Despite trailing D66 by a mere few thousand votes in the final tally, Wilders's party suffered a severe setback (-11 seats compared to its 2023 landslide), paying the price for unfulfilled promises and the internal divisions of the previous governing experience.

VVD (People's Party for Freedom and Democracy): 22 seats. The conservative-liberal party led by Dilan Yeşilgöz continued its slow yet steady erosion of support (-2 seats), crushed in the polarization between the two extreme poles.

GL-PvdA (GreenLeft-Labour Alliance): 20 seats. The left-wing alliance, led by Frans Timmermans, experienced a slight decline, partially penalized by a tactical shift of strategic votes toward Jetten's winning run. Timmermans announced his resignation. In an emotional speech, the former Vice-President of the European Commission acknowledged his personal responsibility for the outcome of the vote.

The Alternative Radical Right Galaxy: Strong growth was recorded by formations such as JA21 (9 seats) and the Forum for Democracy (FvD) (7 seats), bearing witness to a conservative electorate that remains fluid and in motion.

The Key to the Comeback: Rob Jetten's Strategy

Political analysts are studying D66's victory as a masterpiece of political marketing and timing. Rob Jetten successfully tapped into the moderate electorate's fatigue with extreme polarization, proudly wielding national symbols—such as the Dutch flag—to wrest them away from the populist right's monopoly.

The collapse of the Schoof government, which imploded over hyper-strict immigration controls, had generated widespread collective frustration. Jetten skillfully channeled this energy by proposing a pragmatic center path based on structural investments and institutional stability, poaching support from both the liberal-conservative camp and disillusioned left-leaning voters.

Who is Rob Jetten

Born in Veghel on March 25, 1987, Rob Jetten grew up in Uden and completed his academic studies at Radboud University Nijmegen, where he earned a master’s degree in Public Administration. His political career began early within Jonge Democraten (Young Democrats), the youth wing of Democrats 66, where he served as national president from 2013 to 2015. After working as a management consultant for ProRail, the Dutch rail infrastructure manager, Jetten transitioned to full-time politics, entering the House of Representatives (Tweede Kamer) in 2017 at the age of thirty.

Recognized quickly for his sharp analytical skills, eloquent communication, and disciplined work ethic, he made political history in 2018 by becoming the youngest parliamentary group leader for D66 at just 31 years old. During the fourth Rutte cabinet (2022–2023), Jetten cemented his national profile by serving as Minister for Climate and Energy, where he spearheaded major green transition policies and international climate agreements. On August 12, 2023, he succeeded Sigrid Kaag as leader of D66. Known as a pragmatic, energetic, and unapologetically pro-European progressive liberal—orbiting within the Renew Europe group in Brussels—Jetten has successfully evolved from a technocratic party insider into a charismatic national leader capable of uniting the moderate center and standing toe-to-toe with the populist right.

The Day After: The Difficult Chemistry of Governance

The post-election morning following the final count certified the most complex political stalemate in recent decades. With two parties tied at the top with 26 out of 150 seats and a chamber pulverized into more than fifteen distinct factions, forming a new government will require grueling compromises.

Rob Jetten's leadership now faces a historic responsibility: building a stable coalition in a deeply divided country where the center has lifted its head once more, but social polarization remains a powder keg ready to explode at the slightest spark.
