Vittoria Franco’s Anatomy of Power: Totalitarianism, Biopolitics, and the Duty of Public Philosophy

Itinerari filosofici (The Evil of the Twentieth Century: Philosophical Itineraries), published by Castelvecchi on July 26, 2024, in its Frangenti series, offers itself to the reader not merely as a historiographical chronicle of the past century's horrors, but as an impassioned and rigorous philosophical inquiry into the deepest dynamics of contemporary power. To fully grasp the density and lucidity of this text, which arrived in bookstores in the summer of 2024, one must look to the solid academic and intellectual trajectory of its author. Professor Franco trained and worked for many years within environments of the highest scientific profile, having served as a researcher in the History of Philosophy at the prestigious Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa, as well as teaching the History of Political Doctrines at the same Pisan university. This academic background enabled her to develop an extraordinary theoretical sensitivity, which she subsequently combined with a long-standing commitment to political institutions, serving three terms as a Senator of the Republic and chairing the Senate's Culture Committee. This dual role—as both a rigorous scholar and a sharp observer of civic dynamics—is fully reflected in the structure of the book, where conceptual complexity never devolves into sterile academicism but instead translates into a critical instrument for interpreting the present. At the heart of the essay, Professor Franco engages in a critical dialogue with the contributions of such intellectual giants as Hannah Arendt, Michel Foucault, and Giorgio Agamben, focusing on the moment when power ceased to be a simple force of political oppression and transformed into biopower—that is, a claim over the control and manipulation of the very biological life of individuals. The author demonstrates how twentieth-century totalitarianism, in its Nazi and Stalinist manifestations, scientifically reduced the human being to "bare life," stripping individuals of all legal and moral protection long before physical elimination, and she illustrates with precision how bureaucratization and mass conformism made the banalization of radical evil possible. The analysis then extends to the disturbing resonances these logics maintain in our contemporary world, where the control of bodies and social exclusion constantly threaten to assume new technological or digital guises. Today, this same educational and civic urgency is reflected in how Professor Franco is guiding the Istituto Gramsci Toscano in Florence, where she has once again assumed the presidency. Conceiving this role as a form of genuine cultural volunteering that draws heavily upon her lifelong experience, Professor Franco is imprinting on the institute a direction focused on regenerating public debate and educating younger generations. Under her leadership, the Istituto Gramsci does not limit itself to preserving historical memory or conducting pure archival research; instead, it positions itself as a living laboratory of active citizenship, where issues of gender equality, civil rights, critical education, and the metamorphoses of democracy are debated to provide accessible keys of interpretation for civil society, proving that philosophy is, first and foremost, a necessary tool for defending human dignity and the public sphere.
