The Value of Responsibility: Enrico Letta's Mandate Leading the PD Comes to an End

EU/ENG - Enrico Letta's experience at the helm of the Nazareno officially concluded on March 12. Although the open primaries were held on February 26, decreeing Elly Schlein's victory (with the relative informal handover taking place the following day), it was precisely on March 12, 2023, that the National Assembly of the Democratic Party, meeting in Rome, officially proclaimed the new secretary, marking the formal and definitive end of Letta's mandate.

A Season Defined by Responsibility There are moments in the history of a political community when leadership is not measured by communicative aggressiveness, but by the ability to offer a safe harbor, an ethical and institutional center of gravity in times of storm. Enrico Letta's mandate as secretary of the Democratic Party, which began in March 2021 and concluded in March 2023, will remain etched in the collective memory precisely as a season defined by responsibility, intellectual rigor, and political generosity. Called urgently from Paris after the sudden resignation of Nicola Zingaretti, Letta did not hesitate to leave his prestigious chair at Sciences Po to place himself once again at the service of the country and his community. His was a return guided by a profound spirit of service, aimed at restoring a clear value-based identity and a genuinely European outlook to the PD.

Pro-Europeanism as the Beacon of Action Since his inauguration speech, Letta sought to overcome the purely internal factional logics that historically burdened the Nazareno, proposing a high-level synthesis between civil rights and the ecological transition. Issues like the "Ius Scholae" and attention to the youth were not mere electoral slogans, but a sincere attempt to tune the party into the frequencies of the most advanced Western democracies. Letta's pro-Europeanism, as a well-known admirer of Jacques Delors and President of the institute named after him in Paris, was never an abstract facade formula, but a fundamental geopolitical compass. Under his leadership, the Democratic Party was the political force that supported the national unity government chaired by Mario Draghi with the greatest conviction and loyalty, interpreting it as the ultimate guarantee of Italy's credibility on the international stage during a complex phase marked by the exit from the pandemic. At the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, the PD's line was firm, clear, and unambiguous: an Atlantic and European choice of sides that prioritized the defense of democratic values, putting international consistency ahead of electoral convenience calculations.

A Serene and Constructive Leadership Facing Tactical Complexities The balance of Letta's two-year term lends itself to a serene and constructive reading. While on a strictly tactical-electoral level the alliance strategy encountered complex obstacles in the summer of 2022—leading to the fragmentation of the political landscape and the subsequent victory of the center-right—Letta's actions were guided by a principle of linearity. The choice to defend the reform framework of the Draghi government and not to chase populist rhetoric was proof of a way of understanding politics where institutional stability retains a primary value. Even when electoral trends indicated a strong demand for disruptive responses—which then rewarded the growth of the 5 Star Movement in the South and the rise of Fratelli d'Italia—Letta's PD chose to remain the guardian of a serious and predictable government culture, a point of reference for European chancelleries and the productive sector.

The Final Act: The Democratic Transition The true stylistic hallmark of Enrico Letta's leadership was seen, perhaps, in the most difficult moment: the night of September 25, 2022. Announcing that he would not run again for the party leadership, the Secretary chose not to abandon the structure, but to manage a complex congressional transition phase with institutional care. Where other political forces would have risked immediate trauma or splits, Letta guided the party through a constituent process that led to the election of Elly Schlein, ensuring the cohesion of the democratic community and delivering an orderly transition. Enrico Letta's experience thus closes with the merit and clear integrity of having preserved the soul of the Democratic Party as a major democratic, European, and plural force.

L’europeismo come faro dell’azione
