Reclaiming the future: Alfredo Reichlin and the Moral Science of Politics

EU/ENG - The volume "Democracy in the 21st Century: Reflections on the Themes of Alfredo Reichlin," edited with masterful precision by Giuliano Amato for Treccani, constitutes an intellectual endeavor of rare density. Far from being a mere commemorative collection, it establishes itself as a critical analysis of the foundational structures of our modernity.

The work, which has been in bookstores since the summer of 2022, brings together contributions from an elite group of scholars—including Philippe Aghion, Salvatore Rossi, Pierluigi Ciocca, Salvatore Biasco, and Colin Crouch—to subject the legacy of Reichlin, who passed away in March 2017, to a fruitful "stress test" against global asymmetries, the crisis of representation, and the turbulence of contemporary capitalism.

Under Amato’s editorial guidance, the volume weaves a rigorous dialogue between the spiritual biography of a protagonist of the Italian Republic and today’s systemic challenges. It draws upon the insights of Andrea Brandolini, Gianni Toniolo, and Valeria Termini to enrich the text with analytical depth ranging from economic history to the energy transition. Furthermore, the contributions of Lucrezia and Pietro Reichlin fuse the methodological rigor of international academia with the historical sensitivity inherent in a family tradition that has made critical thinking its hallmark, inviting the reader to "stand on the shoulders of giants" to acquire the intellectual posture necessary to govern the complexities of a century that seems to have lost its democratic compass.

It is no coincidence that Reichlin’s final book bears the evocative subtitle “A Letter to My Grandchildren” (The book cover is pictured below) paraphrasing John Maynard Keynes—an economist he had long studied and championed in his reflections, drawing inspiration from the great Cantabrigian whenever it was necessary to chart a course for governing the economic policy of the Italian Left.

The Political Profile of Alfredo Reichlin: A Synthesis of History and Vision

Although collective memory primarily recalls him as an influential figure in militant politics and committed journalism, this volume powerfully restores the profile of Alfredo Reichlin as a refined interpreter of political economy, understood in its noblest sense as a discipline intrinsically linked to social processes and historical power dynamics. His thought was always distinguished by a sharp rejection of technicism for its own sake, preferring a vision in which economics served as a hermeneutic tool to decipher the "national question" in all its complexity. For Reichlin, analysis could never be divorced from the material reality of the country, the persistent dualism between North and South, and the necessity of industrial development intended as a driver of civilization, rather than merely an accumulation of profit.

In this perspective, Reichlin emerges as an ante litteram critic of neoliberal drifts, having grasped decades in advance the risks inherent in a globalization devoid of robust political governance. His reflections rested on the conviction that the market, if removed from democratic regulation, is incapable of spontaneously generating freedom; instead, it risks eroding the very social foundations of democracy. His profile is thus that of an economist who asserts the primacy of politics—conceived not as an overbearing whim, but as a high-level capacity for developmental planning and as a mechanism for a redistribution that encompasses not only material wealth but also decision-making power and human dignity.

Reichlin masterfully embodied the ideal of the economist-humanist. His vision of democratic socialism for the new century, nurtured by engagement with Minsky’s theories and the most advanced European reformism, postulated that economic growth is legitimate only if aimed at expanding the real freedoms of individuals. For him, economics had to reclaim its status as a "moral science," capable of constantly questioning the ultimate purpose of civil coexistence and the quality of the social contract. This intellectual stance allowed him to act as a living bridge between the ideal legacy of the Resistance and the construction of a social and federal Europe, viewing the community project not as a simple single market, but as the indispensable political space to bring contemporary capitalism back within the tracks of authentically inclusive progress.

In the final analysis, the portrait conveyed by Amato’s editorship is that of a politician—influential and decisive in his time—who was a protagonist and a lucid economic advisor during the various attempts at economic governance by the Italian Left. He was a thinker capable of interpreting systemic crises not as fortuitous accidents, but as profound signals of an epochal shift that demands analytical courage and moral rigor. Reichlin thus bequeaths to us not a static doctrine, but a vibrant and never dogmatic method of inquiry, essential for anyone intending to inhabit the present with critical intelligence and civic responsibility.
