The Party of European Socialists Congress in Amsterdam

Protagonisti Sanchez, Schlein, Costa, Ribeira, Garcia-Perez, Timmermans

EU/ENG - The Party of European Socialists (PES) congress was held in Amsterdam on Thursday, October 16th and Saturday, October 18th.

The three-day event, dedicated to revitalizing progressive mobilization, brought together the top leaders of European socialism: Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, the secretary of the Democratic Party in Italy, Elly Schlein, accompanied by Giuseppe Provenzano and Roberto Gualtieri, the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, the Vice President of the European Commission, Teresa Ribera, and the Dutch candidate for prime minister, Frans Timmermans.

The congress called for concrete commitments from the European Commission on housing, climate, workers' rights, and gender equality. A warning to Ursula von der Leyen came from the Netherlands, with the leader of the European Parliament group, Iratze Garcia Perez, calling for a change of pace: "Our support is not a blank check: the work program that the Commission will present in November will be the moment of truth." In Amsterdam, the Spanish prime minister defended the need to establish a common minimum wage across the EU and accused the traditional right of becoming a satellite of the far right by copying its ideas and attacking the rights it has won. Echoing Sánchez, Elly Schlein denounced problems with democratic functioning in many European countries caused by right-wing governments in the Union.
