EU Commissioner Hoekstra: Europe needs Marshall Plan for energy

EU/IN - European Commissioner for Climate, Wopke Hoekstra, in his speech at the EU Sustainable Energy Week in Bruxelles, stressed that if the European Union is to "make the Clean Industrial Deal work" it needs "a Marshall Plan for energy, that is, a real Energy Union". In the coming years, the EU will invest "an additional €100 billion in funding in the production" of clean technologies 'made in Europe', Hoekstra said. This is the same amount to support clean industrial production announced in the Clean Industrial Deal in February. Once again, a European Commissioner called for leveraging the development of renewable energy, grid capacity, interconnections and storage capacity. A push for the adoption of solar is needed in particular because it is "increasingly cheaper". Hoekstra assured that the EU will continue "to invest in technologies that will allow us to be cleaner, more competitive and more self-sufficient in the future" and that can act as a driving force to reindustrialize the economy in the countries of the Union, together with the reduction of bureaucratic burdens. Back in February, Hoekstra had declared that he could exempt around 80 percent of European companies from the obligations set out in the mechanism that introduces a "carbon tax" at borders, given that almost all emissions are the responsibility of a few large importers.
